A Mom Says She Was Publicly Humiliated After Toddler Had An Accident

A Holt, Missouri mothers says she feels embarrassed after two store employees berated her in person and online.

Samantha Sargent told WDAF-TV that it all started when she was with her recently potty-trained daughter, Railyn, at a local Dollar General.  The two-year-old had an accident in the store, so Sargent grabbed a fresh bag of underwear from the shelves and changed Railyn in the bathroom.

From that point on Railyn wore nothing but the clean underwear and a t-shirt, and Sargent says they had no issues until they went to check out.

“The lady just started ringing us up, she didn’t really say anything to us until we were almost finished. That’s when she got to the open package of underwear,” Sargent said. “That’s when she said that she wasn’t properly dressed for a public place and was completely rude and disrespectful, and she humiliated us.”

Sargent posted about the encounter on Facebook and also called the store's manager to complain, but instead of an apology, Sargent found out from a friend that the manager had called her out on Facebook:

“The biggest part of it was I’m a mom, and that’s my baby, and you don’t talk about my child," Sargent told WDAF.  "That’s a feeling that only a mother can understand."

Dollar General's corporate office released a statement to WDAF:

The indident at our store in Holt is not reflective of our mission of Serving Others and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this unfortunate situation may have caused.  We are providing additional training to our store associates in Holt to reinforce our company policies regarding customer service and look forward to the opportunity to serve this customer again soon."
