'Suicide Squad' Wasn't Meant To Be A Scorsese, Alright?

The critics have been slaying DC's Suicide Squad even quicker than Katana's Sword, but does it really stink that bad?

The answer is - it's your perception of the movie, and what you went in expecting. As in any form of art expression, there are multiple theories as to how you can watch this movie and interpret it, but let me say this right now, this wasn't meant to be a Martin Scorsese movie. It wasn't an epic drama directed by Clint Eastwood, or a masterpiece directed by the Cohen Brothers.

Now that you can get that part out of your head, let's continue - and I'll try to do it with the least amount of spoilers possible.

The Movie's Best Character is Harley Quinn

She's the quirky hot chick who went off base. And the sad part about how they put her at the center of all the promo - she ends up still only being a co-star to Rick Flag and Deadshot's drama. Sure, Margot Robbie does end up getting sexualized quite a bit, but as far as the feminists are concerned, realize this: Harley Quinn is deranged in a way, but she, in her deranged mind, does what she wants, when she wants. She's got her own desires, and her own (albeit, crazy) mind - so, critics and feminists, stop making her out to be this headcase lead by the Joker and the Joker only. This movie adaptation gives Harley Quinn her own set of motives - rather than just being blind to the Joker's deranged love.

Deadshot Got Type Casted As Will Smith - Not The Other Way Around

The origin stories range from Deadshot being an enemy of Amanda Waller, Rick Flag, Captain Boomerang, Batman, and everyone else - even that he had a son in the prior adaptations, and that he killed his own brother accidentally. None of this comes up in this version of Suicide Squad, as well as making sure to illustrate that Deadshot is first and foremost a hired hand. They tried to illustrate it, but the film still gave Deadshot this "Dad that needs to prove he's a hero to his daughter" angle, which really is more of a Will Smith type thing than it is a Deadshot thing, and pretty much made Deadshot seem less evil than a cold blood killer. The film also circulates more around Deadshot than it shows in the previews.

Enchantress Should Have Been Played By A Seasoned Actress

No offense to Cara Delevingne - I'm sure one day she'll be great for what she does - but you'd have been better off having someone like Lana Parrilla (Once Upon A Time, "Regina / The Evil Queen) play someone like Enchantress - more wise, seasoned, and more sinister. Delevigne comes off bland and not all that scary, something to the equivalent of a Kristen Stewart in terms of her emotional range.

Viola Davis Is Scary... But Not As Scary As Her How To Get Away With Murder Counterpart

Viola carries the to the letter the attitude of a soldier, and she's a double-crosser, but there's something that wasn't quite there in terms of what you were expecting from her. If anything, she was more of a villain than Enchatress was, even with what was lacking in the performance... But Annalise Keating from HTGAWM is Viola Davis's strongest character when it comes to sinister drama.

Can We Give Some Of The Other Characters Some Nods?

Diablo and Katana are possibly the two most underrated characters. First off, Diablo's past really lays into what his gift is and what he ends up ultimately doing with it in the end - and how his gift has caused him pain his whole life. Katana barely speaks the entire movie, yet she is the one with her dead husband's soul trapped in her sword. We barely find out anything about her character at all, except she's there to protect Rick Flag. As far as Killer Croc and Boomerang, yeah, no one cares.

Stop Comparing Heath Ledger and Jared Leto

Your argument will be invalid every time. First off, for those of you that are hardcore The Dark Knight fans from the Christopher Nolan Batman Series, you will always love Heath Ledger's adaptation of the Joker. When discussing this phenomenon with other lovers of the character, one made a very valid point, saying "If Jack Nicholson did his version of the Joker after Heath Ledger's, they would have said it sucked!" Which is very, very true. Jared Leto brought his own creepy, crazy, and perfectly sinister voice to the proceedings, but the frustrating part was that the promos lead you to believe that there is a lot more Joker in this film than there actually is. Almost all of Jared's screen time is with Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), which sort of bummed us out in terms of trying to decipher how Jared was going to do with The Joker character. We honestly didn't get enough to make that distinction, but they did leave the film open for more Mr. J in the future.

But Finally, Let's Realize This Is A Comic Book Universe Movie

This film wasn't meant to win Oscars, bringing cinemas to their feet in a standing ovation and tears. The film, even with it's lacking points, was still fun in terms of the quirky jokes, but it just sort of missed the mark of what most of us were hoping to see with all the surrounding hype in Suicide Squad's promotional material. The Joker's character had a lot to do with how the film was talked about in the media, and would determine how well the movie was supposed to perform, and as we said, we barely got any of that, on top of a lot of dysfunctional characters that deserved a lot more explanation. If anything, if they would have shaved off half of the time they spent developing the backstory of Deadshot, they would have had a better handle on their characters. What really did wreck the movie the most on top of all of those small things was the villain. There was no imminent threat of the world being taken over, let alone what was actually happening in general. I still don't actually know what they were fighting. At least, with any Avengers type movies, you know exactly what they are fighting.

I encourage you to see the film for yourself at some point, because everyone has a difference of opinion, but mine is simply this: If David Ayer and Zack Snyder had switched tactics, and there was less deep dives for Batman V. Superman's character flaws, and more in Suicide Squad's explanations, we probably would have had a better review of this.

Or it wouldn't have been nearly as easy to convert to a Friends film:
